Abstract

In August 2017, all CPI cities in North Sumatra experienced inflation, namely Medan at 1.06 percent, Pematangsiantar 0.83 percent, Padangsidasat by 0.43 percent and Sibolga at 1.01 percent. Thus, North Sumatra in August 2017 experienced inflation of 1.01 percent.

In August 2017, inflation stood at 1.06 percent or an increase in index from 132.46 in July 2017 to 133.87 in August 2017. Inflation was due to an increase in prices as indicated by the rise of most of the expenditure group index, the group foodstuffs by 5.52 percent; health group by 0.26 percent; education, recreation and sports groups of 0.14 percent; finished food, beverage, cigarette and tobacco group by 0.04 percent; and housing, water, electricity, gas and fuel group by 0.01 percent. Meanwhile, the group that experienced a decrease in index, namely transportation, communication and financial services group by 0.82 percent; and clothing by 0.11 percent.

The main commodities contributing to inflation during August 2017 in Medan include: red pepper, junior high school, chicken meat, dencis, cayenne pepper, green chili, and wet shrimp.

Of the 23 CPI cities in Sumatra Island, the highest inflation occurred in Lhokseumawe at 1.09 percent with CPI of 125.68. The lowest inflation occurred in Batam at 0.01 percent with CPI 129.50. The highest deflation occurred in Pangkal Pinang at 0.78 percent with CPI of 134.88 and the lowest deflation occurred in Metro by 0.13 percent with CPI 136.31.

In Indonesia, in August 2017 from 82 cities observed by the Consumer Price Index (CPI), 35 cities experienced inflation, wherein the highest inflation occurred in Lhokseumawe at 1.09 percent with CPI of 125.68. While the lowest inflation occurred in Bandung by 0.06 percent with CPI of 128.07.
